Rök älg draws from the oldest storytellers carved into northern stone. Inspired by a Bronze Age petroglyph of an elk found in Åskollen, Vestfold, Norway, this piece honors the skilled observation and quiet reverence our ancestors had for the animals that shaped their world. The original carving’s striking anatomical detail (ribs, muscles, even the curve of the spine) challenges the idea that ancient people saw only symbols, not science.
Painted in acrylic on canvas, bold white lines reinterpret the prehistoric elk over a deep, midnight-blue surface patterned like weathered rock. A winding ribbon of runic inscriptions surrounds the creature, echoing the mysterious language of forgotten hands and messages carved to endure long after their voices fell silent.
This piece invites you into the colorful past: where myth and knowledge blurred, and where the Nordic landscape itself became a tablet for memory.
A statement piece for those who feel a pull toward ancient history, archaeology, and the quiet magic of cultures that came before us.
