Across Norway’s ancient coastlines, early storytellers carved scenes of daily life that mattered most: hunters, ships, and the creatures that sustained entire communities. Drammen Whales is inspired by these Stone Age petroglyphs, particularly whale carvings discovered at Skogerveien in Drammen, where the sea and its secrets shaped daily survival.
This ink illustration reimagines those carved figures as a tapestry of voyages and cultures along the Nordic coast. A variety of ship motifs, drawn from archaeological finds across Norway, surround and support each whale: a tribute to the deep reliance on marine life, especially whales of the dolphin family, whose bones fill ancient coastal settlements. Each mark becomes a reminder that resource, ritual, and respect were intertwined on the open water long ago.
Framed by a mythical nordic inspired border, Drammen Whales carries a blend of historical curiosity and quiet reverence: an echo of shared coastlines, shared journeys, and the shared lifeline of the sea.
